This is a critical review comparing two videos of two different historians from two different communities about Eldad the Danite—claiming descent from the Tribe of Dan— who taught in the 800s AD that Israelite tribes lived deep in Africa. His descriptions match West African groups who preserved Israelite traditions for centuries: the Tindirma Israelites of Mali, the Idaksahak (“Sons of Isaac”), the Bani Israel of Senegal, and even the Da or Yakobé tribe of Côte d’Ivoire, whose name connects to “Yaʿaqob” (Jacob) and whose clans preserve ancient Israelite-style customs.
When people from these regions were taken during the slave trade, parts of these traditions traveled with them, becoming part of the heritage of many African Americans today.
