As the U.S. marks its 250th anniversary, a wave of new polling shows a national mood that&#8217;s more pessimistic \u2014 and more divided \u2014 than in decades.<\/p>\n<p>Emerson College Polling replicated a 1976 survey asking Americans if they feel optimistic, pessimistic, or uncertain about the country&#8217;s future. The result: pessimism nearly tripled, from 15% in 1976 to 41% today, even as optimism stayed roughly flat. Gallup found that more than three-quarters of Americans now believe the country&#8217;s founders would be disappointed with the U.S. today \u2014 the most pessimistic reading since Gallup started asking that question in 1999. Separately, a Pew Research survey found 72% of Americans (per AP-NORC) believe the country is headed in the &quot;wrong direction,&quot; and majorities expect the U.S. to be more politically divided, less globally influential, and more dangerous by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>But the picture isn&#8217;t uniformly bleak. Pew found Americans nearly split \u2014 48% optimistic versus 51% pessimistic about the near-term future \u2014 and hopefulness remains the second most common emotion people report about the country&#8217;s direction.
