The Caribbean&#8217;s Black-majority nations, including Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba, trace directly back to enslaved Africans brought to work sugar plantations starting in the 1500s. In the United States, roughly 388,000-400,000 enslaved Africans were brought directly \u2014 a smaller share of the total transatlantic trade than most people assume \u2014 but forced reproduction under slavery grew that population into the tens of millions of Black Americans today.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the Americas: The Arab and Indian Ocean slave trade ran for over a thousand years \u2014 longer than the transatlantic trade \u2014 and created Black communities across the Middle East, including in Iraq and Saudi Arabia, and in parts of India, like the Siddi community, some tracing back over 500 years. Europe has its own smaller but real historical Black populations tied to earlier colonial and Ottoman-era trade routes.<\/p>\n<p>An important distinction: Not all Black presence around the world today traces back to slavery. A great deal is due to more recent, voluntary migration \u2014 colonial-era movement to European countries and 20th-century immigration from former colonies to the UK, France, and the Netherlands, along with ongoing African immigration worldwide.
