Roughly 80 million people are now under heat advisories.<\/p>\n<p>What makes this heat dome especially dangerous: overnight low temperatures aren&#8217;t expected to drop enough for people to actually recover, allowing heat stress to build cumulatively day after day rather than reset each night. High humidity is compounding the danger, making conditions feel even worse than the raw temperature suggests.<\/p>\n<p>This marks the third major heat wave of the summer. The eastern U.S. endured brutal early-July heat that forced communities to cancel Independence Day celebrations and disrupted the country&#8217;s 250th anniversary events. A second wave hit the Southwest and Great Plains in mid-July. Now this third wave is spreading across the central U.S. And it&#8217;s not just an American problem \u2014 Europe&#8217;s June heatwave left France with at least 5,700 more deaths than usual over the period.<\/p>\n<p>Communities are responding: Indianapolis Motor Speedway is offering water refill stations for Sunday&#8217;s Brickyard 400, and Denver recreation centers are opening dedicated cooling areas.
