In this video, we break down how it happened, who was affected, and how the story was buried for generations.

📌 TIMELINE OF EVENTS

Before the massacre — By 1921, oil money had made Tulsa a booming city of over 100,000. Roughly 10,000 of its Black residents lived in the segregated Greenwood district, home to a flourishing business community. Nationally, the years after World War I saw rising racial tension and a resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan.

May 30, 1921 — A Black teenager named Dick Rowland entered an elevator in the Drexel Building. The young white operator, Sarah Page, screamed, and Rowland fled. Investigators later concluded he most likely simply stumbled into her or stepped on her foot.

May 31, 1921 — Police arrested Rowland. That afternoon, the Tulsa Tribune ran a front-page story claiming he had assaulted Page, and rumors raced through the white community. By evening, an angry white mob gathered outside the courthouse demanding the sheriff hand him over. Sheriff Willard McCullough refused and barricaded the top floor to protect Rowland.

Night of May 31 — Around 9 p.m., about 25 armed Black men, many of them WWI veterans, arrived to help guard Rowland and were turned away. Just after 10 p.m., a larger group of roughly 75 returned and were met by about 1,500 white men. Shots were fired, chaos erupted, and the outnumbered Black men retreated to Greenwood.

Overnight into June 1 — Groups of white Tulsans, some deputized and armed by city officials, carried out widespread violence. Fueled by false rumors of a Black "insurrection," thousands poured into Greenwood at dawn, looting and burning across 35 city blocks. Firefighters testified they were forced away at gunpoint. The Red Cross later estimated around 1,256 homes were burned, along with businesses, churches, schools, a hospital, and a library.

June 1 (midday) — The National Guard arrived and Governor J.B.A. Robertson declared martial law shortly before noon, effectively ending the violence. Many Black residents were detained rather than protected — by June 2, some 6,000 people were held under armed guard at the local fairgrounds. All charges against Rowland were dropped, and he soon left Tulsa for good.

The aftermath and cover-up — Officials recorded 36 dead, but historians estimate the true toll may have reached 300. For decades there were no memorials, and records went missing, including the Tribune’s front-page story. The event was rarely taught or discussed until scholars revisited it in the 1970s.

The reckoning — A state commission’s 2001 report concluded that between 100 and 300 people were killed and more than 8,000 were left homeless. In 2018, the investigating body was renamed the 1921 Race Massacre Commission. Viola Fletcher, the oldest survivor, died in November 2025 at age 111, having testified before Congress in 2021.

📚 Based on reporting from The History Channel (HISTORY.com).
🔗 Read the full article: https://www.history.com/articles/tulsa-race-massacre

This video is created for educational and historical purposes.
