In all of our excitement about “the awakening” that’s happening all over the world, how many of us have stopped to really consider what’s about to happen?
I’m not referring to the fun stuff like Israel being restored to the land, but the supernatural judgements that are so terrifying that men’s hearts will fail just from looking at what’s coming (Luke 21:26). Rivers turning to blood, swarms of insects, earthquakes, thunder, lightning, and the sun turning dark are just the warm up.
- There’s a manticore attack on unprotected humans.
- The “beast” will have people put to death if they don’t worship him.
- Demons gather all the armies on earth to go to war with Christ.
Years ago as I read through Revelation over and over again, I realized that the scariest thing in the book is coming face to face with Christ. Just imagine a being so powerful that he gave his enemy his entire game plan from beginning to end, and never once had any doubt that everything would happen exactly like he said it would… simply because he said it would.
“Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure…” – Isaiah 46:9-10
As this consideration played out in my mind, I remembered a quote from C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity. It’s one of my favorite quotes of all time… so I’ll leave you with this to think about:
“God will invade. But I wonder whether people who ask God to interfere openly and directly in our world quite realize what it will be like when He does. When that happens, it is the end of the world. When the author walks on to the stage the play is over. God is going to invade, all right: but what is the good of saying you are on His side then, when you see the whole natural universe melting away like a dream and something else – something it never entered your head to conceive – comes crashing in; something so beautiful to some of us and so terrible to others that none of us will have any choice left? For this time it will God without disguise; something so overwhelming that it will strike either irresistible love or irresistible horror into every creature. It will be too late then to choose your side. There is no use saying you choose to lie down when it has become impossible to stand up. That will not be the time for choosing; it will be the time when we discover which side we really have chosen, whether we realized it before or not. Now, today, this moment, is our chance to choose the right side. God is holding back to give us that chance. It will not last for ever. We must take it or leave it.” – C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
