This source tells us that El-Kahina had dark skin and a mass of hair which may have been an “afro” or “dreadlocks” that were bunched together. The fact that her eyes turned “red” is another signifier that she was a black woman because blacks in the medieval world were noted for having “red” eyes and looking like “devils” . This source confirms the diversity of the medieval Saharan regions. “Huge eyes” was another way blacks were described in the medieval epoch.
