A Rochester, Minnesota jury has delivered a split verdict in the closely watched trial of Shiloh Hendrix, the woman whose racial slur directed at an 8-year-old autistic Black child went viral in 2025.
After more than nine hours of deliberation, jurors found Hendrix, 37, guilty of one count of misdemeanor disorderly conduct — related to her confrontation with the bystander who filmed and confronted her — while acquitting her on a separate count tied directly to her conduct toward the child. Judge Christa M. Daily sentenced her to a stayed 90-day jail term, one year of supervised probation, 200 hours of community service, and a $1,000 fine.
The case stemmed from an April 28, 2025 incident at Roy Sutherland Playground, where an 8-year-old autistic Somali boy took a packet of applesauce from Hendrix’s diaper bag. Hendrix responded with a racial slur, captured on video by a bystander, sparking national attention and a GoFundMe that raised $340,000 in her support. The boy’s father, Shire Jimale, testified through an interpreter during the four-day trial.
Reaction to the verdict was mixed: Rochester NAACP President Walé Elegbede called it a "mixed result," saying what Hendrix did "was horrible" while noting it was the first time in recent memory someone locally faced real consequences for a racist incident. Hendrix’s attorney, Brian Karalus, strongly criticized the process, calling it a "fraud" and a "circus."
Legal observers note the case tested the rarely-used "fighting words" doctrine, a narrow exception to First Amendment speech protections, applied here to racially charged language.
