As public backlash grows against massive AI data centers — from New York’s construction freeze to water contamination concerns in Wyoming — the tech industry is pursuing two very different solutions: shrinking data centers down into people’s homes, or launching them into space entirely.
On the home front, homebuilder PulteGroup is testing small AI "data center nodes" with Nvidia and startup Span, installed directly on the exterior walls of newly built homes. UK startup Heata has already deployed home servers that process cloud computing workloads while using the generated heat to warm residents’ water. Analysts project this "Edge AI" hardware market growing more than 22% annually through 2030, as regulatory pressure and public opposition push compute power out of massive centralized facilities and into individual homes.
At the same time, orbital data centers are moving from science fiction to real development. A U.S. Government Accountability Office report confirmed multiple companies are actively working on placing AI processing systems into satellites, primarily in low Earth orbit, to tap continuous solar power and sidestep Earth’s land, water, and electricity constraints. SpaceX itself is reportedly pursuing a $1.5 trillion valuation partly to fund building orbital data centers for its own AI workloads. But major engineering hurdles remain — space doesn’t cool computing hardware efficiently, the required solar arrays would be larger than anything ever assembled in orbit, and a surge in satellites raises real collision risks.
