Federal prosecutors in Massachusetts have charged two Haitian immigrants in connection with an alleged $7 million fraud scheme involving the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — also known as food assistance benefits.
Authorities say the store owners operated small convenience stores in Boston’s Mattapan neighborhood where they allegedly exchanged SNAP benefits for cash and redeemed unusually high amounts of food-stamp money far beyond what their businesses could reasonably support.
