Could one of the oldest surviving Israelite communities be found in Africa? And could their story help explain traditions connecting the Lost Tribes of Israel, West Africa, and the African diaspora?
In this video, we explore the history of the Beta Israel of Ethiopia, who have long maintained traditions connecting them to the Tribe of Dan. For centuries, they preserved unique Israelite customs, priesthoods, dietary laws, and Sabbath observance while remaining largely separate from mainstream Rabbinic Judaism. Many researchers have noted that some of their practices appear closer to ancient Israelite traditions associated with the First Temple period.
We also examine the account of Eldad the Danite (Eldad ha-Dani), a 9th-century traveler who claimed descent from the Tribe of Dan and described Israelite communities living in Africa beyond the known Jewish world.
