Long lines are showing up at food banks across the country this fall, and many food banks say demand is at record levels heading into the holidays.
In Virginia, food bank leaders say pantries already have lines around the block, with people arriving hours before the doors open. In Washington state, one food pantry says demand is up 55% while donations grew only 6%. Food banks in New York, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Missouri are reporting the same pressure.
What food banks say is driving it:
• Rising grocery, fuel and housing costs
• New SNAP eligibility rules pushing people off benefits
• Less food coming to food banks from the USDA
