Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has fired Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, the Pentagon’s top military planner (the Joint Staff’s "J5"), as President Trump weighs renewed strikes on Iran.
A Pentagon official says Sylvia failed polygraph exams in a classified-leak investigation that has been referred to the Justice Department. Those allegations have not been independently confirmed, and the Joint Staff withdrew its original statement thanking him for 32 years of service.
Sylvia is the second general removed from the J5 post under Hegseth and one of roughly two dozen generals and admirals pushed out since 2025. Hegseth is also cutting top officer positions by 20% by January 2027. He calls it accountability. Critics in Congress call it a purge.
