The fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran appears to be collapsing. Three merchant ships were struck this week in the Strait of Hormuz, including a Qatari vessel, prompting the US military to launch a series of powerful strikes against Iran early Wednesday, hitting more than 80 targets with precision munitions.
Iran has now claimed it targeted more than 80 US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait in retaliation. The US also revoked a sanctions waiver that had allowed temporary Iranian oil sales as part of the June ceasefire deal.
The renewed fighting comes at an especially tense moment — during the multi-day funeral for assassinated Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, with millions of mourners gathered across Iran and Iraq. Talks between the two countries had reportedly been on hold until after his burial.
This is the most significant attack activity in the Strait of Hormuz since late April, threatening to reignite a war that had driven up global oil prices and disrupted shipping for months.
