The Black Virgin of Montserrat is just one of many statues that feature a black Mary holding a black baby Christ. According to “renovators” of the statue, it became black over centuries due to candle smoke. However, that doesn’t seem to make sense when we consider that the statue was once inscribed with the following:
Negra Sum Sed Formosa
“I am Black But Beautiful.”
The Black Virgin of Montserrat is found in Catalonia, Spain.
