18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells, a former Ocean Springs High School athlete and current Southwest Mississippi Community College football player, went missing on July 4, 2026, after a boat trip to Horn Island with friends. His friends returned without him, and his mother reported him missing that night, launching a large search involving the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the United Cajun Navy.
On July 6, a park ranger found a body matching Wells’s description in the water near Horn Island. His mother, Christine Wonsley, confirmed his death on Facebook, calling him "a special soul" who was "always willing to cheer and uplift others."
Investigators suspect Wells drowned and say there is currently no evidence a crime occurred, though the investigation remains active. His football programs at both schools remembered him as a humble, well-respected teammate. A GoFundMe for his family has raised over $100,000.
