Ledbetter confirmed the FBI is assisting with forensic examination of digital evidence — clarifying that this isn’t unusual, since Horn Island is federal land and his office regularly works with the FBI. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office remains the lead agency on the investigation.
Ledbetter also revealed that over 60 witnesses have now been interviewed, including in-depth interviews with the three friends who accompanied Nolan on the boat trip. DA Angel Myers McIlrath called the case a "priority" for her office.
In a significant clarification, Nolan’s friend Tracestin Shepherd addressed the viral video that many believed showed Nolan in a confrontation — he told Good Morning America that the yelling voice in the video was actually his own, not evidence of a fight involving Nolan.
Nolan’s mother, Christine Wonsley, has said it seemed "improbable" her son would voluntarily remain on the island without his phone, and raised concerns about missing Snapchat messages once she received the device. The independent, family-commissioned autopsy remains delayed, with results not yet released.
