Severe thunderstorms slammed New York City and the Tri-State area Saturday, dumping 2-4 inches of rain in hours and triggering flash flood warnings across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens — with Brooklyn and Queens taking the worst of it at over two inches of rain.
The most dramatic scenes came from Woodside, Queens, where floodwaters rose so fast at the BQE and Queens Boulevard that drivers were filmed climbing out of their car windows to escape rising water. One man rode out the flood standing on top of a stranded box truck; others clung to an overpass wall as firefighters worked to reach them. FDNY confirmed rescue operations were underway for people trapped in their cars citywide, and the entrance to the Roosevelt Avenue-Jackson Heights subway station flooded as well.
In Flushing, homeowners spent the aftermath cleaning out flood-damaged homes, while at least three major roadways were shut down across Brooklyn and Queens. The storms also brought a tornado watch across parts of Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and New Jersey, with wind gusts topping 70 mph.
The one silver lining: the storms cleared out the smoky, hazy air that had blanketed the Northeast for days from Canadian wildfires, leaving Sunday sunny and clear — though officials say some particulate matter still lingers for sensitive groups.
