Even Argentina’s own press turned critical — newspaper Clarín wrote that the team "displayed, both on and off the field, a range of values that are rare these days," calling it a side of the country they didn’t want to showcase.
This capped off a tournament already dogged by fan behavior controversies. Egyptian and Cape Verdean supporters accused Argentine fans of hurling beer bottles and abuse during knockout matches, and FIFA opened an investigation after an Argentina fan directed abuse at streamer IShowSpeed during a Miami match. It’s part of a longer pattern — Argentina has previously been fined by FIFA for disorderly conduct at the 2022 World Cup and after a violent fan brawl at a 2025 qualifier in Rio de Janeiro.
