The independent, family-commissioned autopsy into the death of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells has come back inconclusive. Preliminary results list his manner of death as "undetermined," with the report stating further investigation is required.
The independent autopsy was conducted by Dr. Roger Mitchell, President of the National Medical Association. According to the report, Nolan’s organs had already been removed during Mississippi’s official state autopsy before the second, private autopsy took place — a factor that may have limited what the independent exam could determine.
Attorney Ben Crump shared the results this morning at a news conference during the NAACP’s National Convention in Chicago, alongside Nolan’s parents. The announcement comes two days after Nolan’s funeral in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, where Rev. Al Sharpton’s eulogy criticized investigators for publicly stating no foul play was suspected before the investigation had concluded, and questioned why Nolan’s friends left him behind, kept his phone, and didn’t immediately report him missing.
The official Mississippi state autopsy, including toxicology results, remains separately pending. As of now, neither autopsy has produced a determined cause of death, and the investigation remains open.
