Is the US actually running out of oil? Not exactly — but its emergency reserve is in real trouble.
America’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) sat at about 325.7 million barrels as of late June 2026 — the lowest level since 1983, when the reserve was still being filled for the first time. It’s down more than 55% from its 2009 peak of 726.6 million barrels.
